Handstand 101 with Kelsey and Hannah

Do handstands make you more enlightened? No. Do you they make you a better yogi? Nope. BUT Do handstands allow you a chance to challenge yourself in ways you didn’t know possible, switch up your perspective (not only physically!), and allow you the space to PLAY with your community?! YES. Join Kelsey Vasileff and Hannah Lancaster as they tag-team ways to create foundation and fundamental alignment in your handstand practice! These playful ladies will guide you through a powerful vinyasa sequence aimed to strengthen, lengthen, and engage everything you need to grow your handstand from the ground up. Kelsey and Hannah will aid students in workshopping fun exercises, some even utilizing your neighbors support, to provide confidence and courage in our own strength and flexibility. Students will be offered an array of knowledge to assist any level from fledgling fliers to full on handstand-ers. Sunday 9am-5pm (8 hours)

19 hours towards Yoga Alliance Credit & 3 Practicum Hours//This is one of the REQUIRED modules for our 300 Hour TT Program

Open to ALL Practitioners w/at least 1 year yoga practice.

What is assisting?
Have you ever been in class and had someone touch you, assist you, at just the right time? It encouraged you to go deeper into a pose while providing support and a sense of calm. It was done with a loving intention and is just what you needed at that particular moment. A powerful assist has the ability to change the way a person views her practice and herself.

Assisting is about connecting with others.

A workshop for everyone!
Step onto the other side of the mat. By being part of this program you’ll learn more about your own yoga practice and gain an understanding of the postures that will let you break them down and play with them.

Hands-on assisting is a skill rarely taught, even in most teacher-training programs.
•Have you ever wondered what it means to “deepen your practice”?
•Do you want to have a greater understanding of the poses, as well as the alignment principles and anatomy behind them?
•Have you ever thought about teaching?

This is an action based, participatory program. You’ll be getting in there, working with the postures as you give and receive assists. You benefit from both giving and receiving, as you learn how different assists feel in your own body.
This workshop is open to everyone. Assisting others in class is a way to serve and connect with our larger community. It’s an opportunity to “give back” and at the same time explore your own practice. And if you are considering teaching at some point in the future, Assisting 101 lets you experience being on the teaching side of the mat without having to lead the class.

You will learn:
•Basic skeletal anatomy
•How to assist safely and effectively
•The lines of energy that let you assist any pose, even those new to you
•The qualities of a great assist that heighten the experience for the student
•How to create a safe space for people to trust and find a new edge.

After completing this program you will have the opportunity to try out to assist for Southern Soul Yoga.

Our chakra system is composed of energy centers along the spine that hold the key to our spiritual evolution and sense of well-being. These symbolic spinning wheels affect our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

The chakras are organizational hubs that receive, assimilate, store, and transmit life force energy/prana. Together the seven chakras provide a profound architecture for wholeness which unifies mind, body, and spirit.
“Energy is the interface between the mind and the physical body. Like the electricity that connects your software to your hardware, energy connects your mind to your body.

"The programming of the mind, largely unconscious, tells the energy where to go and where not to go in the body Some of these programs serve us well, others create blockages” ~ Anodea Judith

We will begin the journey into how these 7 main energy centers that hold all of our life experiences and future potential.

"Emotion always has its roots in the unconscious and manifests itself in the body". ~Irene Claremont de Castillejo

In this training, you will also learn how to:

  • Develop awareness of 7 energetic centers in the body and how they influence our emotional, physical, mental & spiritual self
  • Explore 6 emotions of the body: Fear, Guilt, Anger, Shame, Joy, Grief
  • Explore the power of the subtle body to influence and shape the physical body (our biography becomes our biology)
  • Vary the Sun and moon Salutation flow to reflect each chakra
  • Incorporate pranayama, mantra, and mudra into chakra practice
  • Understand excess and deficiency in the chakras

An integration of Hatha, Kundalini and deep flow Yoga poses will be experienced to support the awareness of the chakras in your own body/mind for deeper digestion of the information

This course is for anyone wishing to develop their understanding of the chakras and their emotional, physical, mental and energetic effect on the body & mind.

Power Yoga Master Class with Bryan Kest

Bryan Kest’s Power Yoga Master Class is a well-rounded flowing asana practice integrating mental practices that enhance everyday living.  The Master Class is intended to invigorate your body and help you practice developing a calm, less reactive state of mind with dynamic flowing routines.  In a Power Yoga Master Class, you are encouraged to focus on the process and not the end result. This allows ALL levels of yoga practitioners to enjoy and benefit from the Master Class.

 3-hour class:

  • 1-hour lecture about basic philosophy and fundamentals

  • 2-hour physical practice incorporating principles from the lecture (rockin’ Power Yoga class)

Biography

Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979 and has been teaching since 1985. He developed his unique, distinctive style of yoga, Original Power Yoga, in the late 1980s. Over the years, this style, an amazing workout for the body, mind and spirit, has made him a well-known, popular teacher across the country and around the world.

His mainstream popularity is matched by an authentic foundation in the ancient practice of yoga and a long path of development as a yogi (a practitioner of yoga). At age 14, Bryan uprooted from his native Detroit home to make a life change in Hawaii. He moved to live with his father, a doctor, who understood the benefits of yoga. Like many of us, Bryan originally thought yoga was nothing more than strange contortions, but that changed when his father introduced him to a physical style of yoga called Ashtanga. This appealed to him immediately, and he soon observed great changes

in himself, both physically and mentally. Yoga quickly became his passion, one that would take him to India for a year to study with the great yoga masters of the world, Pattabhi Jois. He has been continuing on his yoga path ever since.

Bryan founded and teaches at his studio in Santa Monica, CA. He also teaches at workshops and retreats around the world, and he provides an intensive teacher training program. His most recent endeavor is PowerYoga OnLine. This on-line tool features streaming video of Bryan’s classes in Santa Monica, which are recorded live and streamed to students around the world.  For articles by Bryan and more information about Power Yoga, visit PowerYoga.com.

Unified Body Yoga explores the layered aspects of the body-mind relationship which is the province of hatha yoga. Through the practice of hatha yoga we will explore how the physiology of fascia leads to a deeper understanding of the body-mind relationship. The woven aliveness of body fabric, knit together with the yarn of fascial continuity, provides both the home for and the transport system of internal sensation.

Asana practice will focus on “wisdom-centered movement” – the skillful expression of postures reflecting experience, knowledge, and good judgment.

Through embodied experiences and cutting edge anatomy & physiology this training will prompt a deep and personal awareness of the human architecture.

Teachers will become familiar with the working of the neural myofascial web, employing a deeper awareness of body physiology to lead classes that invite students into a more personal relationship with their authentic self.

Teachers will learn to craft classes that lead to a complete experience for their students, combining safety & challenge and effort & ease.

Join yogic anatomist Michelle Dalbec as she illuminates the properties of fascia and their link with the nervous system, unraveling the yogic path of transformation. Learn more about Michelle at www.myoga.com

Would you like to learn skills to help you stay more focused, present, grounded and centered as a yoga teacher and as human? Are you interested in understanding intuition from a body-based approach? Would you like to create classes that help your students do the same?

In this Advanced Teacher Training weekend, we’ll explore the foundational principles of Somatic Experiencing*** and how to use them to stay more settled in our nervous systems. We’ll learn about how the body and brain respond to stress, both in the immediate moment, and over the course of long periods of time. We’ll work with skills to help us stay the most centered and steady force in the room, and learn how to support our students to become more resilient and grounded as they practice with us.

We will learn how to be more inclusive to the students in our classrooms who are recovering from traumatic events, or who are operating under high levels of stress. Through pacing, language, and presence we can create classes that invite these students to meet their edge without going past it, and to work within their boundaries to reconnect with their own sense of power and joy.

Weekend will include lecture, group and individual exercises, asana practice, teaching skills and opportunities to practice them. Handouts will be provided.
